When one is traveling overseas, we must remember that its a different world out there. There are countries where you can safely approach the police for help and there are countries where you could wind up being robbed by the police.
If you need help or assistance in a foreign country get it from your hotel security or the hotel staff.
If you wish to tour exotic areas get the hotel drivers to drive you around. You can hire hotel drivers by the day which is often as cheap as driving a rented car.
If someone in your travel party has a sudden illness in a public area.
Remove from him or her, his purse or wallet, his jewelry, watches and especially the rings. Such items are usually stolen because thiefs know that the patient could see and be visited by more than ten people by the time he gets help. Than the question will be “who took my stuff ?”
When in a foreign country, remember weather or altitude can hurt you more than being assaulted by robbers. In the jungles of Central America or Southern Mexico, avoid the pyramids in electrical storms they attract lighting. In some coastal areas like Cancun, the humidity can shorten your breath and give you an asthma attack. In the altitude of Mexico City, those beautiful city walks are also accompanied by an extreme smog, everything like altitude, smog and hard walking together often give tourists deadly heart attacks.
Some deadly parts of a city can be around the wrong corner. Remember that hotel driver or guide can get you around to those nice unforgettable scenic places safely.
In some remote towns and villages strangers or tourists are viewed as predators looking to steal their children. You look at young child the wrong way. You could find yourself being attacked by the community.
There are villages in Mexico where Mexicans or tourists are not permitted to spend the night. Such villages are very closed Native American villages. Such communities look upon strangers as outsiders. To them outsiders can not be trusted. Again, Get yourself that hotel guide and driver.
Never show your money in public. Hopefully, you got a money belt for traveling. Keep your money in two or more locations. Remember the hotel has a safe available for your personal items. In public, take a little money, enough for meals and the day's excursion. Take your id's and tourist visa with you.
I knew a family who flew to Italy and rented a car and drove to Madrid in Spain as they toured the route. The cost's were incredible, compared to taking a cruise ship from Italy and seeing the Mediterranean coast. When traveling in Europe, I always recommend Cruise Ships, they are safer and very inexpensive compared to traveling by car. It's like traveling with your hotel.
The lesson to be learned here:
Always prepare yourself and think security as part of your travel. Expected the unexpected and get the right person to help you there. Also remember it's cheaper and safer to hire the hotel driver/guide in the country you are visiting.
