Self Defense and Security for Seniors
Every day we hear about Seniors getting ripped off. Their identities stolen, their credit cards stolen and their money stolen. We leave in a world where there is no honor for Seniors. No respect for your elders.
When
I was a kid about 6 or 7 years of age, I went to a small neighbor
hood store with my Grandmother. As I waited for her, I saw candy
displayed before me. I took two small pieces and put them in my
pocket. When I got home, I forgot about the candy. That night as my
Grandmother prepared my clothes for the next morning she found the candy.
Needless to say she spanked my butt and proceeded to tell me that
theft was wrong and against G^d's commandments. Grandmother also said
to me that my offense was worse because the owner of the store was an
old man who used his profits to feed himself and his wife. I was
required by G^d to honor all elders as if my parents. The next
morning I was escorted to the store where I apologized to the store
owner for taking candy without his permission.
My grandmother recommended that I pay for my sins by working with the store owner for three days. During those wonderful days of punishment I got to know the old man and his wife. I got to learn how to make borscht. I learned to make hallah bread. The storekeepers wife had beautiful long gray hair covered with a simple green scarf and had a soul of great kindness. I learn so much from them both. Everyday, I received kindness and love from them.
Seniors are wonderful people, they have great important knowledge of life. Let's always honor the elderly those Seniors in our life.
Here I will list simple rules for safety and security for Seniors. Print this page and freely give it out or post it where Seniors can read or see it.
Do not stop from making new friends but watch out for predators and users. Maintain your Senior friends. Maintain social activities, go out play cards. Go dancing, go to the pool.
Find Senior activities and attend them. Avoid becoming a hermit and go out with your friends.
Never, never give out your personal data. Never give out your social security numbers to unknown callers or strangers, even if the claim to be from the bank or insurance office.
Have your Social Security or Pension checks go to your bank by direct deposit. Avoid checks coming to your mail box. Mail boxes are not safe. Many years ago, my identity was stolen by someone who broke into my mailbox.
When in public act like a former Marine do not act like a lost individual put confidence in your pockets. Do not become a target by being confused or lost.
When traveling, travels with friends and others. Find travel buddies avoid traveling alone.
Never let so called contractors come into your home. Never let anyone, that you didn't call come visit your privacy. Do not let in Avon salespeople, painters, roofers or strangers.
In your car always put your valuables in the trunk of the car. Do not leave anything of value on the front seat. Thief's will break in your window. You will lose your valuables and have to pay to repair your car window.
Avoid hostility and mean people. Those who display anger toward you can be physically abusive to elders. Take care of yourself report any incidents to police.
Give and pay attention to your personal bank or money affairs. Know your daily balance and dispute to your bank any thing that is wrong.
Keep 10% pepper spray handy by your door or hand. Spray any intruder and spray him often.
To attract attention yell out loud “ Fire, Fire” and repeat the words louder and louder until you get help.
The lesson to be learned here, is:
Seniors are targets too. Watch out for them. Learn from them. They know more than you can believe.
