I used to live in South Texas, people down in there are abused daily by government. It's so very subtle that they don't see it.
I used to travel from Brownsville to San Antonio, Texas for VA appointments. I would take highway 77 north. When I left the county, driving north I would very often get stopped along the highway by a local police officer or a Deputy Sheriff. I would ask why was I stopped the excuse always was
"I have a report of a stolen vehicle matching this vehicle description." He would look at my vehicle registration, ask where I was going and why I was going there?
The first time, I was offended by the questions and his interference in my travel. I just wanted this turkey out of my way to continue my leisure travel. He asked me if he could search my car. Wanting to get rid of him, I said sure go ahead and search. That was my first big mistake.
Seconds after saying "yes go ahead" I was immediately treated like a criminal and ordered to stand about forty feet away from my car. He got on his radio and called somebody. 45 minutes later I was still waiting. I kept asking what am I waiting for? No answer came from him. I was got the impression he was trying to get me to assault him. Sometime later another Deputy showed up with a dog. The dog was run through my car about two times? The deputy's almost seemed pissed that they did not find something. After a delay of 1 and a half hours I was finally allowed to leave. No one apologize and they were very rude. When I saw the dog I knew they were looking for drugs.
Day's later I wrote to my Congressman and never got an answer.
About two months later, I was on a second trip to the VA hospital and was stopped again. I asked why and got the same answer, "Stolen Vehicle". When he asked if he could search my car. I looked him in the eyes and immediately said "NO",
"No, I have a medical appointment in San Antonio, Texas." "I do not appreciate delays. Get a warrant while I drive up highway 77. When you get that warrant I will be on 77 up ahead." I walked back to my car door and got in. As I drove away, the deputy stood there wondering what to do.
Lesson to be learn here:
Learn from someone else's experiences. When on the highway be careful what permission you give to law enforcement.Defend your rights....
